BIOGRAPHY

Anne Barlinckhoff (b. 1989) is a visual artist based in Amsterdam (NL) and Delhi (IN) — works worldwide — creating photographs, fine art prints and visual stories. She graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. A quasi-nomadic childhood characterized her upbringing, as she grew up in an orphanage and foster homes and lived in various places across the Netherlands and (South) Africa.

She draws her inspiration to connect people, no matter their stories or background — bringing them together — because she grew up without a family, a place to call home. Throughout her journey, she wandered through countless places in search of a sense of belonging. It was during these times that photography became her refuge, her solace, and ultimately, her home, with people she met along the way becoming her chosen family.

Anne Barlinckhoff's work serves as a visual narrative, inspired by her nomadic upbringing and diverse cultural exposures. Her works transcend geographical boundaries, offering a profound reflection of both her personal journey and a broader exploration of the human experience. She works instinctively, projecting emotional intent into the viewer's realm of imagination. The dynamic nature of her life, marked by constant movement and exploration, is evident in her art. Her work emphasizes the universal language of human emotion, resilience, belonging, identity and culture with a focus on the beauty found in light and form.

Working closely with her subjects to set the mood and pose, she creates intimate depictions of human bodies immersed in their natural surroundings. The resulting images are an exploration of sculptural bodies transformed into shapes and stories, turning the ordinary into a new kind of intimacy. They evoke a sense of stylized sculpture or a ritualistic performance while suggesting Barlinckhoff’s personal connection with those she photographs. Anne Barlinckhoff often approaches strangers who catch her eye, whether online or on the street, and then establishes relationships with them, cultivating the mutual trust that is crucial for her art.
